Cultural Center Mainz (2014)

The Mainz cultural center (abbreviated to KUZ) is a cultural institution founded in Mainz in 1981 . The KUZ is located in a listed brick building from the 19th century and is in close proximity to the Mainz Winter Harbor and the Rhine . The repertoire of the KUZ includes music concerts, readings, theater performances, theme parties and offers for children.

Seat

The Mainz cultural center has been based in Dagobertstrasse in the old town of Mainz since it was founded in 1981. The red brick building, an elongated clinker building with a transverse wing, was built in 1888 by the garrison building inspector Reinmann as a garrison washing facility for the garrison soldiers lying in the Mainz fortress . From 1932, an industrial training workshop was located here as one of the first inter-company training centers in Mainz. Today the building is classified as an industrial monument and entered on the list of cultural monuments in Mainz's old town .

program

In addition to individual events, the KUZ also offered a fixed program of various activities. Mottopartys took place every Friday and Saturday in the KUZ, for example a perfect beat party , over 30s parties or dark awakening . As a renowned institution, the KUZ can now boast a prominent guest list for the live concerts. For example, Die Ärzte , John McLaughlin , Chick Corea , Gilberto Gil and Die Fantastischen Vier have performed here . From January 1, 2016 up to and including December 13, 2018, the KUZ was closed due to necessary, extensive renovation measures. In 2017 Ulf Glasenhardt was appointed cultural coordinator and head of the "new" KUZ. In order to keep the KUZ alive despite construction work, Glasenhardt and his team realized the series "KUZ on the move" and organized cultural events under the KUZ brand in a wide variety of rooms and clubs. On December 14, 2018, the KUZ was finally reopened. The most important innovation, in addition to a continuous, modern soundproofing, are the event rooms. In the basement, a new concert hall, the so-called "Werkhalle", could be built by merging two former foyer areas. The upper floor of the listed building was completely redeveloped. Here a second, smaller hall, the "lecture hall", has been set up for 100 to 200 seats, which has extensive technical equipment and has since been used for theater performances, readings as well as cabaret and comedy programs. The concert hall and the hall on the upper floor can be used in parallel. After the opening on December 14, 2018, both stage halls were given their intended purpose as part of a large cultural week. The "Werkhalle" was opened by the rapper Chefket , as well as the bands The Notwist and Blumfeld , while the first evening in the "Lehrsaal" of the free theater Junge Bühne Mainz was played with the drama program "Junge Bühne Mainz: Gesammelte Werke". The Young Stage Mainz has since found another additional venue in the KUZ.

A special focus of the live performances was established during the KUZ summer . The event, which has existed since 1991, is now considered a World Music Festival with a focus on Brazilian music. Musicians from the Brazilian, Caribbean and Cuban music scenes such as Gilberto Gil, Celia Cruz or Eliades Ochoa perform here .

For children there is a separate children's theater series with the Kids in the KUZ series . In the event series Kreative Kids in the KUZ , special handicraft and painting courses are offered to creatively encourage children.

KUZ on TV

The KUZ has often been the backdrop for television series from various television stations and organizations. So which transferred ZDF from 1987 to 1996 the live youth program " colon " from the KUZ. In 1992 and 1993 the SWF also broadcast the program “Glaskasten” live from the KUZ and produced the youth program “Na Und” there. NBC GIGA has been broadcasting the regional program for Rhineland-Palatinate from Monday to Friday since 2002 .
