- Leonardo da Vinci completed the painting Mona Lisa after three years of work .
- Sodoma paints a large cycle of frescoes from the life of Saint Benedict for the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and at the same time the Descent from the Cross , now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena.
- Lucas Cranach the Elder gets a job in Wittenberg as court painter to Elector Friedrich the Wise of Saxony . He takes over the painting workshop in Wittenberg Castle, previously headed by Jacopo de 'Barbari , whose tasks include not only furnishing churches and castles with paintings, but also designing festival decorations. Cranach soon began to deal with prints , especially woodcuts .
