The plastics engineering deals with the study and application of physical , chemical , biological and physiological properties of the plastics and is made of chemical engineering emerged as an independent, engineering and scientific research branch.

The aim of this research is to develop or select plastics that have the properties required for a specific application. With the intention of technically realizing innovative plastic products in an environmentally friendly and marketable manner, the plastics engineer therefore focuses on the interactions between material , construction and processing . This means that the content of plastics engineering activity is not only components and semi-finished products made of plastic, but also the generation and processing of plastics and the machines, processes and development processes required for production and for meaningful further use after the use phase.

For the scientific and professional promotion of plastics technology, the university professors of plastics technology have come together in the "Scientific working group of university professors in plastics technology WAK".
