Kurt Aurin

Kurt Aurin (born August 5, 1923 in Nordhausen am Harz; † July 21, 2017 in Müllheim (Baden) ) was a German educational scientist and professor emeritus at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . He published on Montessori pedagogy , questions of educational research, educational counseling and especially educational planning , finally on fundamental questions of school comparison and school system, of upbringing and education as well as the effectiveness of upbringing and pedagogical action in a culturally and socially more diverse society.

Live and act

Kurt Aurin was the only son of the furniture manufacturer Werner Aurin and his wife Margarete Aurin (née Schulze), an important Montessori teacher. After studying psychology, education and philosophy, Aurin earned his doctorate in 1957 at the Free University of Berlin . He wrote his dissertation on: The condition of student performance through the educational design . He then worked for several years at schools and technical schools for social education.

From 1964 to 1969 Kurt Aurin worked in educational research in the state of Baden-Württemberg : three years at the State Institute for Education and Teaching in Stuttgart and from 1967 to 1970 as a department head at the Center for Educational Research at the University of Konstanz . He received high scientific recognition for the empirical studies he led to identify and develop talent in rural areas, among other things. a. in the former districts of Buchen , Tauberbischofsheim and Künzelsau . The studies carried out in 1965 and 1967/68 made a significant contribution to reducing educational disadvantages in rural areas.

In 1969 he was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Hanover . There he rebuilt the teaching and research area of ​​educational sciences. Six years later he followed a call as full professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg to the Chair of Educational Science II, which he held until his retirement in 1991.

The Faculty of Education at the University of Leipzig awarded Aurin an honorary doctorate in February 2003. After his retirement he had made an outstanding contribution to the further development of schools and teacher training in the new federal states and to the development of educational science at the universities, especially at the University of Leipzig. Since 1991 he has been a member of the founding committee of the Faculty of Education.

Kurt Aurin had been a corresponding member of the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning ( Hanover ) since 1973 and worked in an advisory capacity in educational policy committees as well as in research and evaluation commissions at the state and federal level.

Kurt Aurin's lively commitment to Montessori pedagogy since the early 1950s deserves special mention. He was the head of the Berlin working group of the German Montessori Society (DMG) and of Berlin Montessori courses (until 1966). He also served as an executive board member of the DMG (1958-1962) and as a lecturer at Montessori training courses with special education orientation for school nurses, teachers, educators, etc. of the action sunshine of the Children's Center Munich worked from 1971 1998.
