Kurt Bernd Mayer

Kurt Bernd Mayer (also Kurt B. Mayer , born September 6, 1916 in Zurich , Switzerland ; † September 13, 2006 in the USA ) was a Swiss-American sociologist .

Life

Family and education

Kurt Bernd Mayer, son of Salomon Charles Mayer and his wife Anna née Hirsch, passed the federal Matura at the Cantonal High School in Zurich in 1935 . Mayer then studied economics at the University of Zurich until 1939 , interrupted by a study visit to the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1936 and 1937. Kurt Bernd Mayer obtained the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University in 1951 .

Kurt Bernd Mayer married on March 28, 1942 Dr. Elizabeth Meyer. This marriage resulted in the children Charles David, Eva Marion and David Henry. He died in September 2006 a week after he turned 90.

Professional background

After various activities, Kurt Bernd Mayer began teaching at the New School for Social Research in New York City in 1947 . In addition, Mayer was employed as a sociology instructor at Rutgers University from 1948 . In 1953 he followed an appointment as Assistant Professor of Sociology at Brown University in Providence , in 1953 he was promoted to associate professor , in 1956 to full professor , in 1957 he was made head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 1963 he held a visiting professorship at the Australian National University , and in the following year he conducted research at the University of Bern as a Guggenheim fellow . In 1966 he moved to Switzerland, where he was appointed full professor of sociology at the University of Bern, and in 1971 he retired .

The concerning his specialty produce passed through basic treatises Kurt Bernd Mayer became a Fellow of the American Sociological Association and a member of the Population Association of America, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the American Association of University Professors and the Swiss Sociological Association elected .
