history
The first known Swiss in what is now known as the United States was Theobald (Diebold) von Erlach (1541–1565). The history of the Amish Church began with a split between Anabaptists from Switzerland and Alsace , led by Jakob Ammann from Erlenbach in the Simmental .
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, numerous Swiss farmers emigrated to Russia or the USA .
Before 1820, an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 Swiss lived in British North America . Many of them settled in what is now Pennsylvania or North and South Carolina . As many Swiss immigrants again by 1860; these settled mainly in Ohio , Indiana , Illinois and Wisconsin . 50,000 more were added between 1860 and 1880, around 82,000 between 1881 and 1890 and another estimated 90,000 over the next three decades .
Swiss settlements such as Highland (Illinois) , New Glarus (Wisconsin) , Gruetli (Tennessee) grew rapidly, as many Swiss rural settlements in the Midwest and along the Pacific coast, where especially people from Italian-speaking Switzerland built vineyards in California , or settled in (industrial) cities like New York City , Philadelphia , Pittsburgh , Chicago , St. Louis or San Francisco . Since the way of life and political institutions differ only slightly in Switzerland and the USA, it was no problem for most of the Swiss to gain a foothold in their new homeland.
Swiss immigration decreased after 1930 due to the Great Depression and World War II . By 1960, 23,700 Swiss had reached the United States, between 1961 and 1990 another 29,100.
