Friedrich Wilhelm Erich Kurt von Unger (born May 19, 1859 in Potsdam , † November 26, 1931 in Salzburg ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Kurt was the son of the Prussian general of the cavalry Ernst von Unger (1831-1921) and his wife Agnes Müller, born von Lauingen (1835-1914).

Military career

From 1889 he headed the Tactics War History Department in the General Staff and from 1905 he was head of the General Staff War History Department. He also held various positions. From 1892 he was Rittmeister in the 2nd Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 18 in Parchim and chief of the squadron .

After Unger had been promoted to major general on January 27, 1912 with the rank and fees of brigade commander , he was appointed commander of the 20th Cavalry Brigade in Hanover on April 2, 1912 .

With the outbreak of World War I , Unger was appointed commander of the 3rd Cavalry Division and in this capacity was promoted to Lieutenant General on August 19, 1914 . He led his large formation on the Western Front, first in the Battle of Longwy and the fighting in Flanders . At the beginning of December 1914, the division was only in occupation service in occupied Belgium before it was transferred to the Eastern Front at the end of March 1915 . Unger gave up the command and in mid-1916 was appointed inspector of the German stage administration in Dobruja , based in Constan Kona.

On February 3, 1921 Unger received the character of general of the cavalry. During his long military career, he published a large number of articles and books on the cavalry.

Unger married Katharina Brauns (* 1866) on June 15, 1886 in Allenstein . The children Irmgard (* 1890), Jürgen (* 1893), Erich (* 1894) and Ilse (* 1896) emerged from the marriage.
