history

Since the 17th century, two ice-cold springs on the north slope of the Libin were known to have healing properties. At that time, a bathhouse was built on the lower one, popularly known as the Doktorka . In 1783 the city of Prachatitz bought the single-storey bath house for 600 guilders from Josef Zambauer and ran the bath under their own management. At the upper source, which was in the woods of the allodial rule Wallern , the princes Schwarzenberg had a church dedicated to St. Build a wooden chapel dedicated to Philipp Neri . In 1838 only the town's bathing house existed on the site of St. Margarethenbad.

A little later the city sold the bath. In the middle of the 19th century, the bath belonged to the Prachatitz citizen Anton Pachlhofer; he first had a way of the cross leading to the chapel of St. Philipp Neri put on. After the path had been upgraded to a roadway, in June 1859 Pachlhofer had the wooden chapel of St. Remove Philipp Neri and lay the foundation stone for a new stone chapel. Under his successor Kerschbaum, the chapel, popularly known as the Patriarch's Chapel, was completed in 1861. In the second half of the 19th century, instead of the old bath house, a spa promenade with a spa house and ten villas emerged. In the climatic and water spa, diseases of the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system were treated using the methods of Vincenz Prießnitz and Sebastian Kneipp . The lower end of the Way of the Cross in the new St. Margarethenbad spa was the chapel of St. Margarethe. After further changes of ownership, the Bund der Deutschen bought the bath in 1910. He bought a large part of the spa town's private villas and had the buildings modernized. The bathhouses were also expanded to use all modern forms of hydrotherapy . In addition to the health resort, St. Margarethenbad also gained importance as a summer residence for German-Bohemian celebrities. The health resort had its heyday at the turn of the century. One of the most famous spa guests was the violinist Otakar Ševčík during his activity in Prachatitz between 1903 and 1906. The global economic crisis ended the almost century-old existence of the spa. In 1935, the spa business in the St. Margarethenbad spa and health spa was discontinued. After that, St. Margarethenbad only served as the summer residence of wealthy Sudeten Germans. After the Second World War, the spa was closed, and the villas became orphaned after their owners were driven out. Since the second half of the 20th century, the former health resort has been subject to increasing decay. The chapel of St. Margarethe and the Way of the Cross degenerated. An attempt at a study center for language training for foreign students at Charles University in Prague that was started in October 1982 was unsuccessful and was discontinued in February 1986. After that, the former spa was left to decay. After the Velvet Revolution , no investor was found to revive the health resort. Most of the dilapidated villas along the spa promenade between the former bathhouses Helena and Panorama have now been demolished. The area is managed by the Resort sv. Markéty Prachatice, as, who wants to build a wellness and conference center there. In 1991 there were 54 people living in Lázně svaté Markéty; In 2001 there were 70 and in 2011 72.
