The Lüssel is an approximately 20 km long right tributary of the Birs in the Swiss cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn . It drains a 54 km² section of the northern Jura folds and belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine .

The headwaters of the Lüssel are located on the municipality of Lauwil in the canton of Baselland at around 1000 m above sea level. M. in the area of the Passwang . In its upper reaches, the Lüssel flows west through the Bogental , which is flanked in the south by the Passwang and in the north by the Geitenberg . It forms a pond near the Bogental estate. Soon afterwards it flows through a narrow gorge ( Chessiloch ) and crosses over to the Solothurn canton area. Now the Lüssel flows through the narrow valley of Beinwil , cut deep into the Jura chains . It receives water from both sides through various short tributaries, which give the area a strongly chambered structure. Narrow breakthroughs through the hard limestone alternate in rapid succession with valley widths created by clearing the softer clay and marl layers.

Shortly before Erschwil , the Lüssel makes a sharp curve and turns north. It crosses the Erschwil basin before another narrow valley follows between the heights of Chienberg and Lingenberg , which is dominated by the Neu-Thierstein ruins . The Lüssel then enters the Laufen basin, which it crosses from south to north in a wide valley basin. Below Breitenbach it reaches the area of the canton of Baselland again. At Zwingen at the southern foot of the Blauenkette it flows out at 335 m above sea level. M. in the Birs.

The Lüssel is characterized by a pluvial runoff regime . The lower course of the Lüssel has been corrected and partially straightened on some stretches. Large parts of the middle and upper reaches have been preserved in a near-natural or natural state. By Lüsseltal the Passwangstrasse that an important link between the runs Laufental and Swiss plateau produces.
