L7 (English pronounced, L-Seven ) is an American punk band from Los Angeles, founded in 1985, with all women . It had its greatest success in the early 1990s. The founding members were Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas. Their biggest hits are Pretend We're Dead and also from the soundtrack of the movie Natural Born Killers known Shitlist .
Band history
The band was founded in 1985 by Sparks and Gardner, Finch and Plakas joined later. Their first album was released on Epitaph Records , in 1989 they switched to Sub Pop .
In 1991 the band formed Rock For Choice , a pro-choice and women's rights group supported by other bands of the era, including Nirvana , Pearl Jam , Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against the Machine . Rock for Choice organizes concerts and other activities to this day.
Her 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy , produced by Butch Vig , was considered one of the most important recordings of the 90s for Rolling Stone in May 1999 and is widely regarded as her best album.
In 1994 the band made an appearance in the film Serial Mom by John Waters under the name Camel Lips (cf. Cameltoe ) .
L7's last album for the time being, Slap Happy from 1999, was not a success either in the US or in Europe. Finch declared her membership ended and is now the singer of the band The Shocker . Sparks was also busy with other musical projects.
In December 2014, the band announced their comeback on Facebook. Instead of Janis Tanaka, Jennifer Finch takes over the bass again. After more than 15 years, L7 gave concerts in Germany for the first time in June 2015 as support for Slash and Myles Kennedy .
Explanation of the band name
The name is derived from the slang word L7 that was created in the 1950s . It refers to the form that arises when one with the thumb and forefinger of one hand an L -shaped and holds it to the other hand, in the same way, with one seven shapes - a square, English Square , a slang term for Philistine . The sign is also often interpreted as a reference to the " 69 " position during sex.
