action

In the “city without voices” (original: “Ciudad sin voz”) the residents have lost their ability to speak. A dictatorial ruler named "Señor TV" controls the population through television. The singer “La Voz” appears in his station's program and still has one voice. The singer's son, whom she hides from the outside world and who has no eyes, can also speak. Ana, the daughter of a television technician, befriends the boy.

Señor TV has La Voz kidnapped. By means of one of the scientist Dr. The technology developed by Y is intended to use her voice, converted into an acoustic signal, to put the city's residents into deep sleep. The television technician learns of the plan and sets off with his family and La Voz's son to a disused broadcasting station to broadcast a signal that is supposed to thwart Señor TV's plans. They succeed in repairing the station, but the arriving police chief prevents the interference signal from being broadcast. La Voz's voice goes on air as planned; the population falls into a deep sleep, and by means of an apparatus operated by a child, the people's words, their last means of communication, are stolen.

The TV technician manages to overpower the police chief and La Voz's son's voice goes on the air. The child who operated the word-robbing machine dies, the power of Señor TV is broken. The residents have regained their words and their voices.

background

The film opened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2007. The German premiere took place in the same year at the Fantasy Film Festival . In Germany the film did not start regularly in cinemas, but was released on DVD . It was first broadcast on German television on October 1, 2011.

analysis

La Antena was shot entirely in black and white. The soundtrack consists almost exclusively of music, like a silent film, only La Voz and her son have a few lines of spoken dialogue. In contrast to what is usual in silent films, the dialogues of the other protagonists are not shown in subtitles , but rather in the current picture. Instead of modern CGI technology, Sapir uses classic trick techniques such as miniature sets and stop motion .

Reviews

“Experimental black and white science fiction dystopia that impresses with its joy of form. A playful-bizarre allegory based on expressionist silent films about the speechlessness of a society that has been brought into line. "

“' La Antena ' is a visually impressive homage filmed in b / w to the almost forgotten era of silent films. With a lot of love for detail, peppered with bizarre characters and surprising, witty ideas and a touching imagery , the Argentine director Esteban Sapir tells the story of a family in his second feature film that has the courage to defend itself against heteronomy and oppression. "

- Markus Klingbeil, Filmfuchs.de

“' La Antena ' finds a lot of form, but not a suitable one to tell the content of the story, which has a kind of media fascism as its content. For this reason, the homage and further development of the silent film of the 20s unfortunately fails due to a lack of stringency . "
