La Cumbre ( 4670  m ) is the name of a pass in Bolivia , over which the road traffic on the highway Ruta 3 from the metropolises La Paz and El Alto on the Bolivian Altiplano via the Yungas valleys with the Bolivian lowlands is handled. Directly south of the top of the pass, Ruta 41 branches off from Ruta 3 , which is intended as a direct road connection to El Alto from here.

On the journey from La Paz on the Yungas Strait over the La Cumbre Pass to Coroico, an altitude difference of around 63 kilometers is overcome and almost all climates, from snow and ice at the level of the pass to the tropical rainforest in the valley - and crossed the eco-zones of South America.

Yungas Street

Río Unduavi

Directly above the La Cumbre Pass, the Río Unduavi rises in a small mountain lake at an altitude of 4744 m at 16/19/48  / S and 68/03/05 / W , which flows from here in a south-easterly direction and crosses under the pass road and after a length of 68 kilometers at the Puente Villa settlement, it joins the Río Taquesi to the Río Tamampaya , which flows downstream over the Río de la Paz to the Río Beni .

Laguna Estrellani

Directly west of the La Cumbre pass, at an altitude of 4648  m, lies the mountain lake Laguna Estrellani , which is 700 meters long and up to 500 meters wide. From the Laguna Estrellani the Río Chuquiaguillo flows in a southerly direction, which as an extension of the Río Orkho Jahuira reaches the city of La Paz and flows into the upper reaches of the Río de la Paz .

Cotapata National Park

Directly north of the La Cumbre Pass is the Cotapata National Park (Parque nacional y área natural de manejo integrado Cotapata (PN y ANMI Cotapata) ), which was founded in 1993 and covers an area of ​​650 km². In the area of ​​the Cotapata National Park are the peaks of Manquilizani ( 5,324 m), Telata (5,336 m) and Illampú (5,519 m).

Vuelta a Bolivia

The annual road bike race of the Vuelta a Bolivia , which led from the lowlands of the Department of Santa Cruz via the Department of Cochabamba and the Department of Oruro to the Department of La Paz , ran over the La Cumbre Pass and reached its highest point on the fifth stage with the La Cumbre Pass reached. Because of this altitude, the competition was also known as the “roof of the cycling world”.
