Lakshmi Sahgal
Lakshmi Sahgal (also Sehgal ; Hindi : लक्ष्मी सहगल , Lakṣmī Sahagal ; born October 24, 1914 in Madras ; † July 23, 2012 in Kanpur , Uttar Pradesh ) was an Indian politician and officer in the Indian National Army during the Second World War . She was also known as Captain Lakshmi or Colonel Lakshmi .
Life
Sahgal was born to the Tamil criminal lawyer S. Swaminathan and the social worker, freedom fighter and suffragette AV Ammukutty (also known as Ammu Swaminathan). She studied medicine at Madras Medical College and became a qualified gynecologist. In 1940 she went to Singapore and practiced there.
After the British surrendered to the Japanese in 1942, she came into contact with Indian soldiers and finally in 1943 with Subhash Chandra Bose , who wanted to establish a women's regiment (Rani of Jhansi Regiment) within the Indian National Army (INA). Lakshmi joined this brigade and received the rank of Colonel . She was militarily and medically engaged. She held a ministerial post in the provisional government of Azad Hind . In 1946 she was captured by the British and taken to India, but later released without trial.
In 1947 she married Colonel Prem Sahgal - a former member of the Indian National Army and one of four exemplary INA defendants in the Red Fort war crimes trial - in Lahaur and they settled in Kanpur , where Lakshmi worked as a doctor.
In 1971 Lakshmi Sahgal became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) . In 2002 she was nominated in the presidential elections by the four left-wing parties Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India , Revolutionary Socialist Party and All India Forward Bloc as the only opposing candidate against APJ Abdul Kalam , but was clearly inferior.
In 1998 she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .
Her daughter Subhashini Ali was married to director Muzaffar Ali and is a prominent communist politician and trade unionist. Their son Shaad Ali , Sahgal's grandson, is also a director.
