Lantern (English for "lantern") is a Finnish black and death metal band from Kuopio that was founded in 2007.

history

After the line-up of the band Cacodaemon had changed significantly, the guitarist, bassist and drummer Cruciatus decided to break up Cacodaemon in the summer of 2007 and start over with Lantern. The singer Necrophilos came to him, whereupon the demo Virgin Taste of Damnation was recorded as a duo and released in 2008. The group then took part in the 2009 sampler Metal on Metal III: Third Warning of the Storms with the song Cauldron of Souls . In mid-2009, the band recorded five more songs that made up the 2010 demo Doom-Scrawled . The demo was re-released in 2011 on the New Zealand label Internecion Productions as EP Subterranean Effulgence . A song ( Those Long Perished ) from the first demo was included on the Hard Rocker magazine's The Sounds of Hell sampler in 2010 . In 2011 the group played their first gig in Turku and in early 2012 another one in Kuopio. Guitarist Niko aka St. Belial, bassist Juha Vainikainen aka J. Noisehunter and drummer J. Poussu helped out as live musicians. In the meantime, the band worked over a period of seven months on their debut album, which was released in 2013 on Dark Descent Records under the name Below . At the end of 2014, the group recorded a new single, which was to be released instead of an unreleased split release with Anhedonist , which had split up. However, the single was not released either. Instead, the demo Rehearsal '14 was released in 2016 via Behest Records , which was followed by the album II: Morphosis via Dark Descent Records in March 2017 .

style

The Sludgelord from thesludgelord.blogspot.de assigned the band to Black and Death Metal in his review of Below , although the music sounds dark and brutal. Occasionally the group also incorporate elements from Doom Metal . The singing consists of screams and shouts , with the text remaining easy to understand. Spyros Stasis from metal-temple.com wrote in his review that the album features old-school death metal that has been enriched by black metal. The band mixes influences from different bands like the paranoid sound of Demilich , the groove of Demigod , the aggressiveness of Abhorrence and the early death and thrash metal hybrids of Necropsy . In addition, they process the proto-death-metal from Possessed and the first two Slayer albums, some Entombed's debut album and US-American death metal from Autopsy and early Morbid Angel . Gretha Breuer from Rock Hard was surprised by the comparison with Demilich. In an interview with her, Crucicatus stated that Antti Boman is a friend and that Demilich and Lantern “avoid the traditional and the conventional”. Cruciatus was influenced in his youth by Beherit and Impaled Nazarene . A certain melancholy is important in the songs , which is almost always present in Finnish music. Breuer II: Morphosis had reviewed an issue earlier . It contains Death Metal, which is a "mixture of bell-light guitar melodies, dark riffs , growls with a Finnish accent and a lot of reverb". The “ staccato growls” were often just off the beat. With "drawn out dream melodies" and "aggro growls" the music gets even more space.
