Las Manchas is on the west side of La Palma

Las Manchas (“ The Spots ”) is a locality on the Canary Island of La Palma along the  LP-2  and  LP-212  roads in the districts of Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso .

history

In Las Manchas there was already one of the haciendas of the Palmerian landowner family Massieu in the 17th century ; Nicolás Massieu y Vandala also had the Ermita de San Nicolás church built. Since the separation of the municipality of El Paso from Los Llanos de Aridane in 1837, the place belongs to both municipalities. The local border runs along the LP-2. The part below (west) of the road is officially called Las Manchas de Abajo , the part above turns into San Nicolás de las Manchas .

In 1949 the volcano San Juan with its lava flow buried parts of Las Manchas (and of San Nicolás) under itself.

Belonging to two municipal districts of the same name

Just like the location, two municipal districts are called El Paso (this also includes El Paraiso and Jedey) and Los Llanos de Aridane (this also includes Cuatro Caminos). The two parishes border in the north with the parishes Todoque (municipality Los Llanos), Tajuya and Tacande (both municipality El Paso), in the east with the municipality Villa de Mazo , in the south with the municipality Fuencaliente de La Palma and in the west with Puerto Naos (Los Llanos municipality). In the south, both districts with the name Las Manchas extend into the area of the Protected Landscape ( Paiseje Protegido ) Tamanca .

Natural location and economy

In Las Manchas agriculture dominates , for which water is a limiting factor. The geographical location on the western slope of La Palma means that there is no rain caused by the trade winds . In addition, the height of around 500 m above sea level leads to high temperatures in summer and comparatively cool winters. The sources of the caldera , from which the Aridane Valley was supplied via water pipes soon after the conquest , could not be used due to the distance and the height difference.

This led to a concentration on viticulture . The Massieus hacienda was already based on wine, and fruit trees were also cultivated back then. The local wineries now produce DO wines.

In recent years, the production of DO goat cheese ( Queso palmero ) has also established itself.

Tourism only exists to the extent that fincas are occasionally offered as holiday accommodation.
