The telephone operators (original title: Las chicas del cable ) is a Spanish historical drama series, produced by Netflix . The Telephone Operators was the American media company's first original Spanish series.
The series is about four young women of different social backgrounds who start working for the Spanish telephone company in Madrid in 1928 . Lidia, Carlota, Ángeles and Marga face new technical challenges in their modern workplace and accompany each other through the turbulence of private life and through their personal developments. In the male-dominated society, they fight for equality. The event traces the social and political development in Spain up to the years of the civil war from 1936 to 1939.
The main roles are played by Ana Fernández , Nadia di Santiago , Blanca Suárez and Maggie Civantos .
The first season with eight episodes was released on Netflix as Cable Girls worldwide on April 28, 2017. The second season was released on December 25, 2017, the third on September 7, 2018. The fourth season, which, like all previous seasons, comprises eight episodes , was released on Netflix worldwide on August 9, 2019. The first five episodes of the fifth and final season were released on February 14, 2020. The second part followed on July 3, 2020.

In the online edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Julia Bähr recalls the initial enthusiasm for streaming series because of the advantage over linear television that you can watch episode by episode without waiting for the next broadcast date. She criticizes Netflix for the salami tactic of hacking the fifth season of telephone operators into two parts. The provider has the advantage that the users would come by more often if the date for the beginning of the second half was not given, and they might discover other interesting content. However, she doubts that the strategy will work: The users felt "as if their dealer alternately offered good substance and then only washing powder again".
