Last Hero - Once Upon a Time in China II is an action film from 1992. Like its predecessor, Once Upon a Time in China , it was directed by Tsui Hark.

action

In this film, Jet Li portrays the Chinese doctor and master of the Chinese martial arts Hung Gar Kuen Wong Fei Hung , who comes from the province of Fu-Shang. Together with his assistant Foon and his cousin Yee, he takes a trip to an international medical congress in Canton . Mostly Western doctors take part in this meeting, and Dr. Wong is supposed to explain Chinese acupuncture as a guest speaker .

At exactly this point in time, a political upheaval takes place in Canton. The White Lotus sect wants to keep all western influences on Chinese culture at bay by force. Cousin Yee, who dresses in the western style, has problems at a White Lotus rally and is supposed to be kidnapped, which Wong Fei Hung successfully prevents, whereupon the leader of the sect, Master Kung, swears revenge.

At the medical congress, Wong Fei Hung meets doctor Sun Yat-sen , who has studied Western medicine. The two hold the lecture together. Doctor Sun also wants to bring about a political overthrow, but by peaceful means. His goal is to make China a republic.

When the Linguistic Institute is attacked by the White Lotus, Wong Fei Hung, Foon and cousin Yee save a group of children. They want to put them in the town hall first, but the lieutenant of the Chinese Guard, Nap-lan Yun-seut, explains to Dr. Wong that he cannot guarantee the protection of the children. The companions then place them in the British consulate. There they meet Brother Luk, the head of the Linguistic Institute, who is a friend and co-conspirator of Dr Sun. So that the lieutenant of the Chinese Guard, Nap-lan Yun-seut, can take them prisoner, he paves the way for the White Lotus so that they can devastate the British Consulate. Through a trick and with the help of Wong Fei Hung, Brother Luk escapes.

Then Wong Fei Hung and Brother Luk set out to destroy the Temple of the White Lotus and kill the spiritual leader Kung. After successful completion, they set out to meet up with Foon again and to come to the jetty, where they want to drop off with the others on the ship to Ton Ga Bay. Before that, they still have to get the list of names with the supporters of the peaceful coup from hiding. There they are attacked by the Chinese guard. Brother Luk is killed in the process. Lieutenant Nap-lan Yun-seut and Wong Fei Hung face the final battle.

criticism

"A carefully produced, furiously staged" martial arts "fable that, in addition to (comparatively few) breathtaking action sequences, comes up with a politically remarkably balanced plot that clearly takes a position on the current situation in China."

Awards

James Wong won the Taiwanese Golden Horse Award in 1992 for 'Best Song' . The film won the 1993 Hong Kong Film Award for choreography of the fight scenes and was nominated in eight categories for the same award.

Note on age ratings

For a long time the film was only available in an FSK-18 version. In 2005 the film was submitted again to the FSK, which approved the film in its unabridged version for ages 12 and over. However, the DVD has an FSK-16 approval.
