action

Joanna and Michael Reed have been happily married for three years. Joanna becomes jealous when she meets Michael's handsome colleague Laura at a party. When confronted, Michael denies having a relationship with her. The next day Michael goes on a business trip with Laura and his colleague Andy.

While Michael is away, Joanna runs into Alex, her French ex-boyfriend. The two were together briefly years ago at a time when Joanna and Michael were temporarily separated. They both still have strong feelings for each other and Joanna never told Michael about Alex. Although Joanna and Alex are very attracted to each other, they don't sleep together. Alex leaves town the next morning.

Michael desires Laura. He loves Joanna, but does not resist temptation. The morning after, he breaks off the business trip prematurely and returns home.

When Michael comes home, he finds Joanna crying. Her shoes are lying around, indicating that she was off the night before. At this point the film ends.

Reviews

Andreas Scheiner at zeit-online.de comments on this film: “'Last Night' is not a Revolutionary Road, not a relationship exploration with a socially critical superstructure. Tadjedin never puts the lifestyle of her model couple up for grabs; From the simple starting point she developed a coherent romantic drama that is fondly remembered the morning after. "

Critic.de writes similarly: “'Last Night' is not at a loss for words. First, however, directorial debutante Massy Tadjedin tries to inscribe the protagonists into their milieu with scenes from everyday life. Routine movements, concentrated and yet absent looks, Michael (Sam Worthington) and Joanna (Keira Knightley) move through their spacious New York apartment as if automatically and lifeless. [...] The second guard, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, are probably the more charismatic actors, but they only get little differentiated roles to play. They should seduce us, including us, to reflect on our own values and ideas of love. But what and how much depends on it, remains unrealistic and unreal, because the universally exemplary 'Last Night' is open at all times. "

Rainer Gansera writes for the Süddeutsche Zeitung : “The men are drawn in a charming and lovable way, but Massy Tadjedin puts the women in the limelight in a masterly manner: Keira Knightley's romantic fragility, Eva Mendes' brilliant sensuality. It is seldom possible to make female attractions glow in such a sparkling manner. "

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
