biography
Huhtasaari was a volunteer teacher at a Seventh-day Adventist school in the Marshall Islands for one year from 1999 to 2000 . In 2004 she completed her studies as a teacher and class teacher at Jyväskylä University . At the University of Eastern Finland she trained to be a specialist teacher in religion, and in 2008 she completed a degree in special education at the University of Helsinki . From 2009 she worked as a special educator in Pori . In addition to Finnish , she speaks English , Swedish , German and Russian .
Huhtasaari is married to the doctor Teemu Lämsä. The two have two daughters together.
Political career
She was elected to the Pori City Council for the first time in 2012 and was re-elected in 2017.
In 2014, she was a candidate in the European elections and received 9,132 votes, but missed entering parliament. From 2015 she represented Satakunta in the Finnish Parliament and since then has been a member of the committees for foreign affairs and education as well as Finnish delegates in the Nordic Council . In June 2017, about two years after the beginning of the legislative period, there was a split among the base Finns when Jussi Halla-aho, who was convicted in 2012 for “inciting racial hatred”, was elected chairman of the party; a fall of the government could be prevented by founding the Blue Future , which among others all former cabinet members of the base Finns joined. Huhtasaari had also supported Halla-aho in his candidacy to succeed the previous chairman Timo Soini . Huhtasaari is considered to be the political foster daughter of Jussi Halla-aho and, on his recommendation, was elected the first deputy chairman of the base fins on the same day.
She was nominated as a Basic Finn candidate for the 2018 presidential election. Their slogan was “Suomi takaisin” ( “Finland is back” ). Huhtasaari received 6.9% of the vote and lost to incumbent President Sauli Niinistö in the first ballot . In April 2019 she was re-elected to the Finnish parliament, under the leadership of Halla-aho, the base Finns became the second strongest force and remained in the opposition.
In May 2019, Huhtasaari ran again in the European elections and was elected together with Teuvo Hakkarainen as one of two members of the European Parliament for the grassroots. She joined the Identity and Democracy group and is a member of the group's executive committee. She is also a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and part of the delegations for relations with Japan and the United States of America. In favor of her seat in the European Parliament, she gave up her seat in the Finnish Parliament.
Political positions
Laura Huhtasaari mainly represents national conservative positions. Above all, she advocates for Finland to leave both the euro and the European Union , because the latter is increasingly becoming a new " Soviet Union ". She is also an outspoken critic of Finland's current immigration policy: she warns of the “ Islamization of Europe”, advocates an immediate border closure and cites neighboring Sweden as a negative example of unsuccessful integration. If necessary, Finland can and must also break international treaties. In Russia Huhtasaari sees a "threat to the security of Finland" and stated that Finland was in the case of Russian aggression helplessly lost; Critics then accused her of negating the Finnish defense capability. Nonetheless, during the presidential election campaign, she spoke out against Finnish membership of NATO , thereby contradicting party chairman Halla-aho.
Huhtasaari regularly emphasizes her Christian faith. She is a creationist and considers the theory of evolution to be an "impossible theory". She also campaigns against same-sex marriage , which has been possible in Finland since 2017. She also supports the US President Donald Trump . She repeatedly spoke out in favor of tightening Finnish criminal law, citing Estonia and Russia as role models in this context . She also requested an online registry for sex offenders based on the American model.
Controversy
During the 2018 presidential election campaign, allegations were made that Huhtasaari had plagiarized her master's thesis at Jyväskylä University. An external expert opinion came to the conclusion that Huhtasaari's violations of scientific practice were indeed "serious" and assessed parts of the work as a deception. Huhtasaari defended himself with the argument that it was at most a question of inattentiveness on their part, but in no case was it a matter of intentional deception, and criticized the commissioning of an external expert opinion after the university itself had not initially found any serious violations. In addition, during the course of the debate, she published a positive testimonial about her voluntary teaching work in Micronesia , with which she wanted to prove her suitability as a teacher. With the exception of the press coverage, the results of the investigation had no further consequences for the presidential candidate, as the case was already statute-barred at this point.
In March 2019, Tero Niskanen, Deputy City Councilor in Pori and member of the competing National Collection Party , threatened to burn down Huhtasaari's house. Shortly afterwards, he apologized to Huhtasaari for what he had said and resigned from both his position and the party. Several times before, vandalism had occurred at the politician's house.
