Lê Thành Khôi (* 1923 in Hanoi , Tonkin , French Indochina ) is a Vietnamese - French educational and economist as well as a retired author, UNESCO advisor and university professor. He is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Education and Education and Development at the University of Paris V “Descartes” . He is also known as the author of authoritative works on Vietnamese history and literature .

life and career

He comes from a traditional Confucian - Buddhist family of scholars from Hanoi. His father was Lê Thành Y (1893–1973), professor at the Lycée Albert Sarraut in Hanoi and at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris.

Lê Thành Khôi completed his Baccalauréat degree with a philological profile (French, Latin, Greek) at the Lycée Albert Sarraut and then began studying law . His studies were interrupted in 1945 by the chaos of war and the August Revolution that followed . In 1947 - after the outbreak of the Indochina War - he left Vietnam and enrolled in the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Paris (Sorbonne) . In 1949 he obtained a doctorate in economics with a thesis on Japan. At the same time he attended the École des Langues Orientales , where he graduated in Vietnamese and Chinese. In 1950 he attended the Hague Academy for International Law, where he completed his studies with a diploma.

In the following years he worked as a research assistant and lecturer at the law and economics faculty of the University of Paris, the Institut de science économique appliquée (ISEA), the universities of Caen and Nanterre , the Institut d'étude du développement économique et social (IEDES ) and the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE).

From 1963 Lê Thành Khôi also worked as a consultant for economic and cultural development for various international organizations - primarily UNESCO , next to the office of the International Labor Organization in Geneva, the Agence de Coopération Culturelle et Technique (forerunner of the Francophonie ), the United Nations University in Tokyo and the United Nations Development Program .

In 1968 he obtained a second doctorate, this time in the field of culture and human sciences ( doctorat en lettres et sciences humaines ). In his doctoral thesis he dealt with educational economics and educational planning . In 1971 - after the Paris University was split up - he became a junior professor ( professeur associé ) at the newly created University of Paris Descartes (Paris V). He later received a full professorship and a chair for comparative education and training and development ( éducation comparée et éducation et développement ).

In 1992 he retired and became emeritus.

He is married to Thẩm Thị Hồng Anh , a daughter of Thẩm Hoàng Tín (Mayor of Hanoi 1950-52). The jazz guitarist Nguyên Lê is the son of the two.

Research priorities and works

Lê Thành Khôi is considered to be one of the founders of comparative educational research and the scientific investigation of international educational cooperation . He researches the relationship between educational policy and economic and social development, with a focus on the situation in developing countries. His (second) doctoral thesis "L'Industrie de l'enseignement" , in which he presented and analyzed educational institutions as an industry, made him a pioneer in educational economics . Because of this specialist knowledge, he became a sought-after expert in promoting education; he has worked as a visiting professor or consultant in more than forty countries.

He is best known, however, for his overview of Vietnamese history and literature, beginning with Le Viêt-Nam, Histoire et Civilization, which was published in 1955 . This work was published in a German translation by Otto Karow in 1969 ( 3000 Years of Vietnam: Fate and Culture of a Country ) and is still the most comprehensive German-language treatise on the history of Vietnam. Although Lê Thành Khôi only acquired his knowledge of history and literature at home and through self-study , his books are considered standard works in Vietnam Studies . He wrote all of his publications in French, it was not until 2014 that a Vietnamese translation of his major works appeared in Vietnam.

It was in 2003 with the Grand Prix de la Francophonie (Médaille de vermeil) of française Académie and the 2012 Phan Chau Trinh-Culture Prize awarded.

Lê Thành Khôi has written over forty books during his career and published numerous other articles in specialist journals.
