Lebanon is a municipality in the state of Maine in the United States with 6,031 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census). The community meets the New Hampshire border in the west and is surrounded by several large settlements ( Rochester , Portsmouth , Sanford, etc.). Major rivers that run through the town are the Salmon Falls River and the Little River . The area is predominantly agricultural.
The area was sold to settlers by Massachusetts in 1733 under the name Towwhow Plantation (after the Indian name for this area) and plowed by them a few years later. On June 25, 1767, the community was declared a town, an administratively independent unit with a seat in the Maine Senate, under the current name Lebanon .
In 1871 the Portland and Rochester Railroad reached the place with the Portland – Rochester railway line and built the East Lebanon station (today: Eastwood ) there. The emigration of residents - between 1830 and 1870 the number of residents fell by 18% from 2391 to 1953 - could not stop the railway line, on the contrary: by 1930 the number of residents fell to 1,148. Starting from this historic low, the number of residents has since increased more than fivefold. In particular, the discovery of the place as a local recreation area for the residents of the large metropolitan areas on the east coast with the simultaneous increase in mobility due to the constant spread of cars is responsible for this development.
All types of school up to high school are represented in the community. The most important mode of transport is US Route 202, which runs from south-east to north-west through the town and connects Lebanon (Maine) to the centers on the east coast.
