Lee Mi-young ( kor. 이 미영 ; born August 19, 1979 ) is a South Korean shot putter .

Athletic career

Lee Mi-young gained her first international experience at the 2002 Asian Championships in Colombo , where she finished fourth with 15.94 m. Then she participated in the Asian Games in Busan , where she came in eighth with 15.80 m. In 2003 she was fourth again at the Asian Championships in Manila with 17.60 m and in 2004 she qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where she was eliminated with 16.35 m in the preliminary round. In 2005 she took part in the World Championships in Helsinki and was also unable to qualify for the final there with 16.60 m. Then she finished sixth at the Asian Championships in Incheon with 16.20 m and was fourth at the East Asian Games in Macau with 16.27 m, as well as at the Asian Games in 2006 in the Qatari capital Doha .

In 2007 she celebrated her greatest success at the Asian Championships in Amman by winning the silver medal behind the Chinese Liu Xiangrong . In 2008 she took part again in the Olympic Games in Beijing , but did not qualify for the final again with 15.10 m . In 2009 she finished fifth at the 2018 Asian Championships in Guangzhou with 16.18 m and won the bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Games there . In 2011 she qualified again for the World Championships in Daegu and was eliminated there with 16.18 m in the first round. Two years later she was fourth at the Asian Championships in Pune and the East Asian Games in Tianjin . At the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, she finished sixth with 16.65 m and then temporarily ended her career as an active competitive athlete. However, she has been taking part in competitions since 2016 and finished sixth at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta with 15.49 m.

Between 2004 and 2007, 2009 and 2010, as well as 2012, 2013 and 2018, Lee became the South Korean champion in the shot put. She is a graduate of the Catholic Kwandong University in Gangneung .
