action

The 65-year-old literature teacher Josef Weberknecht (in the original: Josef Tkaloun) is fed up with his rebellious students and quits. But at home alone with his wife Eliška, he is bored, so he looks for a new job. He fails as a bicycle courier and finally takes a job in the empties acceptance department of a supermarket, which becomes the new center of his life. While he is playing for his colleagues Amor and the silent employee “Schwätzer”, whose real name is tailor, actually marries a customer in the end, Josef's private life is gloomy. Over the years his marriage has lost all charm. Josef therefore secretly indulges in erotic fantasies in which former colleagues, but also young customers appear. His daughter is also a cause for concern, as she is so absorbed in her belief in the end of the world that her husband leaves her and their son for someone else.

Josef couples his daughter with a former colleague. At the same time he realizes that his marriage is about to end, especially since his wife is adored by a man whom she gives French lessons and he suddenly feels jealous. For the 40th wedding anniversary he is organizing a balloon ride together. Due to a combination of unfortunate circumstances, Josef and Eliška are suddenly alone in the balloon, which floats away and which Josef only has to control himself via radio. The situation of mortal danger welds both of them together, so that they look forward to the years to come after Josef landed the balloon happily.

Reviews

“[...] 'Leergut' is one of those films that has a sense of humor - no jokes and certainly no gags. It is a comedy that balances on the verge of tragic comedy and at the same time allows itself kitsch. This includes one of the most touching declarations of love of the past cinema years [...]. "

"For those who are not fans of the very special poetry of Eastern European cinema and find the whole thing 'fairytale-like' and 'bizarre', this old-man fantasy is a terrible torture: Far too long, far too colorful, far too sensitive [...] . "

Awards

In 2007 Leergut was awarded the audience award at the Karlsbad Film Festival , the Cottbus Film Festival and the CineFest in Hamburg.
