The Lehigh River is a 166-kilometer tributary of the Delaware River in eastern Pennsylvania . The Lehigh River found literary mention in John Jakes ' novel trilogy filmed as Torches in the Storm . The hometown of George Hazard ( Lehigh Station ), however, is fictional. The river follows a very winding course through the Appalachian Mountains , which is why the Lenni Lenape called it Lechewuekink ('where there are many divisions, branches'), from which the anglicised name Lehigh developed. The upper reaches of the river are characterized by numerous rapids. Its lower reaches form the heartland of an area called Lehigh Valley , which was of historical importance for the mining of anthracite coal and steel production .

Run

The river has its origin in the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania . It rises from several pools in southwest Wayne County , about 25 km southeast of Scranton . It initially follows a southwest direction through the south of Lackawanna County and flows through the Francis E. Walter Reservoir. At White Haven , Middleburg , it turns south and zigzags through Lehigh Gorge State Park to Jim Thorpe and then southeast to Lehighton . He squeezes southeast of Lehighton in a narrow gorge cut by the Blue Mountain over. This point is known as the Lehigh Gap . From there, the water flows in a south-easterly direction to Allentown , where Little Lehigh Creek flows into it, and then to the north-east past Bethlehem , and then flows into the Delaware River in Easton on the state border with New Jersey .

Hydrology

The United States Geological Survey operates a gauge in Glendon . The average annual runoff there is 106 m³ / s.
