Welsch was born in the revolutionary year of 1848 as the first son of Catholic farmers in Arzdorf . At the age of 13, he moved from the local elementary school to the Rector's School in nearby Meckenheim , which is run by Catholic clergy, and there he prepared to attend the preparatory school (preparatory school) of the Christian School Brothers on the Rhine in Koblenz , which he attended at the age of 15. This order was founded in the 17th century by the French Johannes Baptist de La Salle . From there, in 1865, at the age of 17, he switched to the teachers' college of the school brothers . He passed his teaching exams after three years at the Royal Prussian Teachers' College in Brühl .

Professional career

Heinrich Welsch made his first important educational experiences in Koblenz as the head of a boarding school run by the school brothers for orphaned boys. Shortly before his 25th birthday, he took up a position as a private tutor for the children of the imperial baron Leopold von Fürstenberg at Körtlinghausen Castle in the Sauerland . When the older sons switched to high school , "the happiest and happiest years of his life" were over for Welsch, as he wrote in his memoirs.

Then Welsch applied for the Prussian school service. On September 1, 1877, he took up a position in Worringen , only to move to Sülz for three years shortly afterwards . Finally in 1881 he found his life's work in the rapidly developing industrial city of Kalk on the right bank of the Rhine . There he got to know the dark side of the industrial revolution: poverty, lack of education, unhealthy living conditions, etc.

As a well-appointed teacher, Welsch started a family. On August 18, 1886, he married Katharina Zentner from Klein Villip near his hometown Arzdorf, who worked as a teacher in neighboring Oberbachem . They had five children between 1893 and 1901, of which two daughters reached adulthood.

Rector of an auxiliary school in Kalk

In Cologne, on the left bank of the Rhine, the first school for "children with mentally abnormal development" was built as early as 1886. In 1905, Welsch founded the first auxiliary school in the industrial and working-class district of Kalk, which was then just incorporated on the right bank of the Rhine, for which he submitted an application for expansion in 1909. Welsch headed the school in Hollweghstrasse as principal and looked after his students and their social situation, for example also unmarried young mothers whom he did not want to be rejected because of their “misstep” but brought them back to their families. Shortly before the First World War , he retired from active school service. He died in Cologne on June 7, 1935 .

Post fame

Carnival song

After his death, the Cologne street singer group Drei Laachduve (with Will Herkenrath, text, Hermann Kläser, music and Heinz Jung) composed the carnival song by teacher Welsch and Steinahl Schull in d'r Kayjass number zero for the 1938/39 session , recorded on 28 December 1938. The song took him to the Greeks' market in Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine, where there actually was a special school between 1891 and 1939, which was located on the corner of Kaygasse 1 / Großer Greeksmarkt 87 .

This song made the educators popular in the Cologne Carnival and beyond. His grave in the Kalk cemetery is now a grave of honor . The Rheinische Förderschule für Sprache, lower secondary level, in Cologne-Flittard was named after Heinrich Welsch.
