history

Main article: Architecture of the 1950s in Eilenburg

Leipziger Straße 57-67 is the reconstruction of a roadside development that was destroyed by the effects of the war. The building complex was built in stages from Eckartstraße to Marktplatz between 1953 and 1957 as part of the national construction project . Tapped bricks from the rubble of the old architecture were used. After the end of the GDR , the ensemble became the property of the municipal housing and management company (EWV), which has been offering the residential and commercial units there for rent ever since. At the end of the 1990s, extensive renovation work was carried out on the street. The existing dormers and gable were removed.

architecture

The high-quality buildings with their rich ornamentation can best be assigned to socialist classicism . The houses are not in a building line , but generally set back compared to the previous development in order to give the street space more space.

Leipziger Strasse 57

The three-storey building at Leipziger Strasse 57 represents the corner development to Eckartstrasse and connects to the old town towards the west (out of town). The shop areas on the ground floor are particularly highlighted by a red-brown painted band. A cornice with a frieze in the same color separates the business premises from the living areas on the upper floors. The entrance area and the staircase above protrude slightly from the facade and close with a tail that takes up the eaves . Just below this undulating roof edge is an ox-eye . The bezels of the shop and staircase entrances are simply profiled, those of the shop windows and living room windows protrude to different extents, whereby on the upper floors they also stand out from the natural color tone with their reddish brown . The building is followed by a row of buildings along Eckartstraße (western roadside development). Like the entire complex, a hipped roof was implemented.

Leipziger Strasse 58-67

The three-storey, elongated part of the building (house numbers 58 to 61) accommodates the frieze-provided cornice on Leipziger Strasse 57, which separates the natural-colored shop level from the residential floors. The entrances to the living and business rooms are partially combined. In this case, they are located inside the building and are accessible through an open segment arch portal. All entrances and shop windows have protruding bottles. The horizontal structure through the ribbon windows on the upper floors is interrupted by a total of six vertical ribbon windows. On the one hand, these are designed as oriels framed by ashlar above the entrances 58 and 61 and, on the other hand, they are arranged as groups of three elongated windows in the manner of French balconies , each supported by four decorative consoles and ending with a simple cornice just below the roof edge . The bezels of the apartment windows are subtly profiled and slightly contrasted with the white of the facade by a natural color. On the west side of the gable there are three blind windows on the ground floor , the window sills of which are each supported by two consoles. The slightly overhanging eaves bears a hipped roof. At the western end of the development, in the course of Eckartstraße (eastern roadside development), there is a slightly curved row construction.

A section of the building (house number 62), indented about one and a half meters, connects to the east. The cornice of the neighboring building is not included. Door and window frames have a profile and color emphasis. Above the entrance door with its segment arch is the stairwell bay on two consoles with three elongated windows each, which ends with a cornice at the top. The areas between the individually framed bay windows are decorated with art typical of the time. This part of the building is connected to the western roadside development of Rollestrasse as a row structure.

The distinctive two-arched archway (house number 63) protrudes clearly from the building alignment line of both this and the preceding part of the building. A large and a small arch on the street and courtyard side formed the passage and the passage to the roller road. The passage is now closed to car traffic. In the masonry of the protruding building there is another arched passage to the west. All arches have a keystone; The agraffe of the large arch towards Leipziger Straße shows the coat of arms of the GDR and the year 1957 as the date of completion, the keystone of the adjoining small arch has no further decoration, as does the keystones of the rear arches towards Rollestrasse. That of the third round arch shows an ornament typical of the time. The arches rest on a round column with a capital towards Leipziger Straße , and on a square column with a surrounding cornice towards Rollestraße. Supported by two further columns inside the passage are two residential floors above the archway, which are separated from below by a window cornice. The access to the apartments is on the courtyard side. A bay window that protrudes centrally over the large arch opens into the hip of the roof, the ridge of which runs across the ridge of the roof of the neighboring parts of the building, with an additional small hip. There are loggias in the same place on the rear facade . With the same number of floors, the roof ridge is slightly higher from this part of the building.

The part of the building attached to the east (house numbers 64 and 65) is again in line with Leipziger Strasse 58 to 61 and has similarities in design. The entrances to the apartments and shops are also combined here and are located inside the building. On the outside, they are designed with a profiled segment arch portal with a keystone. The shop windows in this area also have segmental arches throughout. The windows, which are arranged at regular intervals, create a horizontal structure that is interrupted by two projecting parts of the building above the entrance areas. These projections have a decor typical of the time, which is used several times in the entire square. A cornice also separates living and business areas here.

The following part of the building (house numbers 66 and 67) represents the connection to the development in Rinckartstrasse and thus closes the gap to the market square. In contrast to the western parts of the building, it has four floors. While house number 66 is the usual combined entrance for residential and business areas and has a segment portal with a keystone, the Leipziger Straße 67 entrance is simple, as there are no shops there. The ground floor of this part of the building occupied by the printing office of the resident has always Lion Pharmacy. A bay window over three floors in the facade of house number 66 with its French balconies, which is supported by two consoles, rises up with a hip in the roof structure. The windows of the residential floors above the Leipziger Straße 67 entrance are also designed as French balconies without protruding. Except for the profiled window and door sockets, the extended cornice and the eaves, this part of the building is poor in ornamentation. The adjoining corner development with the entrance to the pharmacy is already part of the Rinckartstraße development (house number 1) , contrary to the street signs .
