Leo Richard Smith (born August 31, 1905 in Attica , New York , USA ; † October 9, 1963 in Rome ) was Bishop of Ogdensburg .

Life

Leo Richard Smith attended Canisius College in Buffalo , where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1926 . He then continued his studies in philosophy and Catholic theology in Rome . Smith was in 1928 at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas to the doctor of philosophy , and in 1930 on de Urban College of Propaganda Fide for a doctor of theology doctorate . On December 21, 1929 , he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Buffalo through the Cardinal Vicar of Rome , Basilio Pompili . 1932 Leo Richard Smith received his doctorate iuris utriusque .

Smith then became a curate at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo. In 1934 he became Deputy Chancellor of the Buffalo Diocese. In 1942 he was awarded the honorary title of Papal Chamberlain and in 1946 the honorary title of Papal House Prelate . Leo Richard Smith became Chancellor of the Buffalo Diocese in 1946.

On June 30, 1952, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Marida and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Buffalo. The Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani , ordained him episcopally on September 24 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Brooklyn , Raymond Augustine Kearney , and the auxiliary bishop in the United States military ordinariate , James Henry Ambrose Griffiths . 1953 Leo Richard Smith became Vicar General of the Buffalo Diocese.

On February 12, 1963, Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the bishop of Ogdensburg.

Leo Richard Smith attended the first and second sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
