Léon Bonnat: Self-Portrait

Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat Hon. RA (born June 20, 1833 in Bayonne , † September 8, 1922 in Monchy-Saint-Éloi , Département Oise ) was a French painter.

Life

Bonnat first became a student of Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz in Madrid and then joined Léon Cogniet's studio in Paris at the age of 21 . His history pictures are characterized by a solid, strong, Spanish-style coloring and harmony of color; his figures, free from all coquetry, are vigorously modeled, stand out clearly and brightly and show a great sharpness of characteristics, which of course sometimes is increased to rawness. In 1874 he created a "crucified Christ" which, because of its naturalistic, almost expressionistic depiction, met with rejection from the public and art critics alike.

Since 1875 he has mainly devoted himself to portraits and has achieved a great reputation in Paris society in this regard. One of the first of its kind was the portrait of actress Alix Pasca . His masterpieces are the portraits of Adolphe Thiers , Victor Hugo and President Jules Grévy , which are characterized by size and energy of the characteristics and by a modeling of great plastic power. In 1915 Bonnat was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , two years later also an honorary member ( Honorary NA ) of the National Academy of Design .

At the age of 89 he died on September 8, 1922 in Monchy-Saint-Éloi, Dept. Oise.
