Leon Pomarede

Leon Pomarede , also De Pomarede and De la Pomarede (* around 1807 in Tarbes , Hautes-Pyrénées , France ; † 1892 in St. Louis , Missouri ), was a Franco-American panorama , landscape , genre , history , Miniature and decorative painter .

Life

Pomarede, son of Jacques Pomarede and Hortense Abadie, received artistic training in Europe, probably in Paris , Germany and Italy . Around 1830 he emigrated to the United States . There he soon settled in New Orleans , joined the theater painter Antoine Mondelli (* 1799; active in New Orleans from 1821–1856) and married his daughter. In January 1832 he announced that he could decorate rooms in oil or fresco. In the same year he went to St. Louis (Missouri) and created one of the oldest vedute of this city. In 1834 he was commissioned to design the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France . In 1837 he returned to New Orleans and opened his own studio . In 1841 he finished the commission for three religious paintings to furnish St. Patrick's Church. Mondelli and George David Coulon (1822-1904) assisted him.

In 1843 he moved to St. Louis again, settled down permanently and entered into a business partnership with Thomas Edgeworth Courtenay (1822-1875) to develop a moving panorama to depict the Mississippi . In 1848 he also temporarily cooperated with Henry Lewis , who soon decided to create his own panorama. In the development of the panorama, Pomarede received support from the house and ship painter Charles Wimar , whom he trained as an artist and who thus began his career as a successful painter. In 1849 "Pomaréde's Original Panorama of the Mississippi River and Indian Life" went on tour through St. Louis, New Orleans, New York City and other cities before it went up in flames in November 1850 in Newark (New Jersey) . After this loss, Pomarede returned to St. Louis, reopened a studio and created religious and genre paintings as well as murals for churches, theaters, hotels and public buildings for the rest of his life . He died at the age of about 85 after falling from a scaffolding while working in a church in Hannibal, Missouri .
