Johann Leonhard Hug
Johann Leonhard Hug , also pseudonym: Thomas Hugson , (born June 1, 1765 in Konstanz , † March 11, 1846 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and orientalist .
Life
Hug, the son of a locksmith, first attended grammar school in Konstanz from 1775 to 1781, and from 1781 to 1783 he studied philosophy at the Konstanz Lyceum. In 1783 he switched to studying Catholic theology at the University of Freiburg , and in 1788/1789 he attended the seminary in Meersburg . In 1789 he received the Constance Minster the priesthood . In the years 1790/1791 he first worked as a pastor in Reute near Freiburg .
In 1791 he received a reputation as a professor of Oriental Languages and Old Testament in Freiburg. In 1793 he received his doctorate at the theological faculty in Freiburg . From 1793 he held a double professorship for the Old and New Testament . His pupil was Joseph Eutych Kopp from 1814-1815 .
In 1827 Hug became a member of the Freiburg cathedral chapter , and from 1843 he was cathedral dean.
Johann Leonhard Hug is buried in the old cemetery in Freiburg im Breisgau. The Freiburg sculptor Josef Alois Knittel created his tomb .

His works are dedicated to researching the origin and creation of biblical books and their scientific interpretation. They show a critical attitude, but are nonetheless positive and apologetic in character. One of his writings on the origins of human knowledge, written in 1796, was published by him under the pseudonym Thomas Hugson and is listed in the index of forbidden books.
He was editor of the journal for the clergy of the Archdiocese of Freiburg (1828–34) and the journal for theology (with Johann Baptist Hirschner, 1839–49).
