Trauttenberg came from the Egerland branch of the Franconian aristocratic family Trautenberg . At the beginning of the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778, he joined the Preiss infantry regiment (No. 24) of the Austrian army as a cadet . In the First Coalition War , Trauttenberg sat in the battle of Codroipo on March 16, 1797 as a captain at the head of two infantry battalions whose officers had failed, restored the order of the battle and thus saved Archduke Karl in command from capture. He was awarded the Maria Theresa Order for this, combined with the elevation to the baron class , and promoted to major .

During the Second Coalition War , Trauttenberg was taken prisoner by Magnano as a lieutenant colonel in April 1799 , was soon replaced and promoted to colonel in November for special bravery in the battles for Terbigo . In 1800 he took over the command of his old regiment "Preiss". He suppressed a riot that arose in Vienna's lower classes at the beginning of 1803 with more caution than violence.

Appointed major general in 1807 , Trauttenberg commanded an infantry brigade at the end of the army column in the campaign against the Duchy of Warsaw in April 1809 . On the day of the Battle of Raszyn , the brigade began their march from Tarczyn to the battlefield 15 kilometers to the north in the early afternoon . In the evenings she joined the mass of troops pent up on the right wing in front of the Utrata River without firing a shot. On the night of May 2, 1809, a regiment of his brigade under the command of Baillet de Latours (No. 63) lost two thirds of its population due to a night bayonet attack by the Poles under General Sokolnicki during the destruction of the Austrian Vistula bridgehead opposite Góra Kalwaria .
