action

Milan in the early post-war period. Paola Molon from Ferrara is married to Enrico Fontana, a wealthy businessman. Because Paola is very attractive, the suspicious husband lets the private investigator Carloni monitor her. Above all, he wants information about Paola's past life, her past. Carloni finds out that a few months before their wedding in Ferrara, Paola Molon had a relationship with a certain Guido Garroni, who was officially engaged to a friend of Paola's. Paola's relationship with Guido was abruptly cut off when Guido's fiancée was killed in a mysterious accident. Paola and Guido were complicit in the girl's death, but this was never publicly known. When Paola finds out that her husband Enrico has been rummaging around in her past, she immediately gets in touch with Guido. Both meet secretly in Milan.

Guido and Paola still fear an investigation into the circumstances that led to the girl's tragic death. The passion between the two, which had temporarily cooled down due to Paola's marriage to Enrico, is suddenly flaring up all the more. Paola is ready to leave her husband and venture a new start with Guido. But Guido has no money and Paola is used to living in the luxury that Enrico has given her for years. Paola, the stronger will of the two, instigates the unstable Guido to murder Enrico in order to then flee with his money. But Enrico has not remained inactive in the meantime. He found out about his wife's relationship with Guido. While his future murderer is already lying in wait for him on the street, Enrico races to his death in his car - whether on purpose or not. While Paola continues to love Guido, she has suddenly become a complete stranger to him and he leaves town disaffected.

Reviews

“Antonioni's first feature film clearly shows the specific characteristics of the artist. Formally, this testifies to the dissolution of the narrative structure; the plot is told on different levels of time and consciousness. The camera stays at a distance and circles the people as it were. "

- Reclams film guide, by Dieter Krusche, collaboration: Jürgen Labenski. P. 269. Stuttgart 1973

In the lexicon of international films it says: “First feature film by Michelangelo Antonioni, the plot is colportal, the actors are not very independent, but the rhythm of the images and editing is already coordinated with the gloomy analysis of the inexorable decline of human contacts; overall more morbid than sensitively differentiating. "

“With this film he turns away from neorealism, within which he had worked as a documentary filmmaker. (...) Many of the characteristics that characterized Antonioni's later work were already present here: the suggestive street scenes, some sequences with remarkably complex camera movements, the motif of the unsolved mystery and above all the confrontation of a beautiful, erotic woman with an impoverished man. Some critics, especially in France, received the film with enthusiastic approval. "

- Bucher's Encyclopedia of Films, Verlag CJ Bucher, Lucerne and Frankfurt / M. 1977, p. 41
