Chronicle of a Love is an Italian drama with film noir elements from 1950, the first full-length feature film production by the previous documentarist Michelangelo Antonioni . Massimo Girotti and Lucia Bosè (both on the right in the picture) play the main roles of an abysmal pair of lovers .

Milan in the early post-war period. Paola Molon from Ferrara is married to Enrico Fontana, a wealthy businessman. Because Paola is very attractive, the suspicious husband lets the private investigator Carloni monitor her. Above all, he wants information about Paola's past life, her past. Carloni finds out that a few months before their wedding in Ferrara, Paola Molon had a relationship with a certain Guido Garroni, who was officially engaged to a friend of Paola's. Paola's relationship with Guido was abruptly cut off when Guido's fiancée was killed in a mysterious accident. Paola and Guido were complicit in the girl's death, but this was never publicly known. When Paola finds out that her husband Enrico has been rummaging around in her past, she immediately gets in touch with Guido. Both meet secretly in Milan.
Guido and Paola still fear an investigation into the circumstances that led to the girl's tragic death. The passion between the two, which had temporarily cooled down due to Paola's marriage to Enrico, is suddenly flaring up all the more. Paola is ready to leave her husband and venture a new start with Guido. But Guido has no money and Paola is used to living in the luxury that Enrico has given her for years. Paola, the stronger will of the two, instigates the unstable Guido to murder Enrico in order to then flee with his money. But Enrico has not remained inactive in the meantime. He found out about his wife's relationship with Guido. While his future murderer is already lying in wait for him on the street, Enrico races to his death in his car - whether on purpose or not. While Paola continues to love Guido, she has suddenly become a complete stranger to him and he leaves town disaffected.
Production notes
Chronicle of a love , inspired by the Hollywood film noir tradition of the 1940s, but also by Luchino Visconti's Ossessione (1942), was first presented to an audience during the Biarritz Film Festival on September 18, 1950. The Italian premiere was on November 3, 1950 in Milan. In Germany Chronicle of a Love did not show in the cinema; its German premiere took place on January 10, 1966 on ZDF .
Piero Filippone created the film structures, the costumes are by Ferdinando Sarmi. Francesco Maselli assisted director Antonioni.
