Leucophysalis is a plant genus of the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It consists of two types that are common in North America .

description

Leucophysalis species are upright or splaying, annual or perennial , herbaceous plants . The leaves are stem-borne and stand individually or in pairs. They are stalked and can have different hairs. The flowers stand individually up to four on short flower stalks in the leaf axils.

The calyx is bell-shaped and not inverted at the base. The crown is wheel-shaped, colored pale yellow or white and provided with yellowish-green markings at the base of the corolla lobes. The corolla tube is about as long as the chalice. The edge of the crown is only slightly lobed and almost entire. In the crown throat there are fluffy, hairy pillows. The stamens are just as long or shorter than the stylus , the anthers open lengthways and are pale yellow.

The fruit is a green, fleshy, spherical berry with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 cm. The seeds are flattened and kidney-shaped. The calyx enlarges on the fruit and surrounds it completely or is only slightly shorter. It fits closely to the fruit and is neither puffed up nor bent back.

Systematics

Within the systematics of the nightshade family , the genus Leucophysalis is placed in the tribe Physaleae.

Two types are distinguished within the genus Leucophysalis :

Botanical history

The genus Leucophysalis was described as a monotypic genus by Per Axel Rydberg in 1896 . The only species he recognized, Leucophysalis grandiflora , was initially included in the genus Physalis . The connection to some Asian species of the genus Chamaesaracha was controversial in the following time, so that the Leucophysalis was partly seen within this genus. A broader concept of Leucophysalis was introduced in 1971 and 1977 by John Earl Averett who, in addition to the type species, also included the North American species Leucophysalis nana (first described as Saracha nana ) and some Asian species in the genus. Later work showed, however, that this broad concept is not tenable, so that a revision of the genus from 2009 only contains Leucophysalis grandiflora and Leucophysalis nana . The species Leucophysalis viscosa , which is also partly included in the genus and occurs in Mexico and Guatemala , was placed in a monotypical genus Schraderanthus in 2009 .
