Lew Moissejewitsch Abeliowitsch ( Russian Лев Моисеевич Абелиович , Belarusian Леў Майсеевіч Абеліёвіч Leu Majssejewitsch Abelijowitsch , English Lev Moyseyevich Abeliovich , scientific. Transliteration Lev Moiseevic Abeliovič * December 24, 1911 . Jul / 6. January  1912 greg. In Vilnius , Russian Empire ; †  December 8, 1985 in Minsk , Soviet Union ) was a Russian composer and pianist. In the Encyclopaedia Judaica (2nd edition) he is mentioned as a Belarusian composer and pianist. He is also referred to in literature as a Lithuanian, Soviet and Jewish composer.

Life

Lev Abeliovich was born in Vilnius on January 6, 1912. His father Moses (Moissei) Abeliowitsch was an insurance agent. Lew first studied law at Vilnius University. Against the wishes of his parents, he dropped out at the age of 23 shortly before defending his doctoral thesis. He went to Warsaw to the Music Conservatory . From 1935 to 1939 he studied composition with Kazimierz Sikorski and piano with Zbigniew Drzewiecki . To finance his studies he gave Latin and literature lessons. Occasionally he made translations. After the German attack on Poland , he fled to Minsk. There he studied composition with Vasily Andrejewitsch Solotarjow at the National Conservatory . He graduated from Minsk in 1941. After the Second World War he studied in Moscow with Nikolai Myaskovsky in 1945/1946 . He then devoted himself to composing. Later he studied Belarusian folk music.

During his studies in Warsaw he met Mieczysław Weinberg . He had a close friendship with him. They also studied together in Minsk. Abeliowitsch dedicated the fresco No. 1 and his third symphony to him.
