The Limmat Verlag in Zurich was on 19 March 1975 as Limmat Verlag cooperative entered in the register.

The publisher is actually a few years older: the socialist Theo Pinkus and a group of students had been looking for a publisher for the exhibition and the resulting volume of documents on the “History of the Swiss Labor Movement”. The book should first appear at Huber-Verlag in Frauenfeld , which tipped the "left-wing work" out of the program before it was published. After that, the newly established Swiss Suhrkamp branch stepped into the breach, and there too, pressure from above, no publication was made.

The first book by the publisher was therefore the Swiss labor movement : documents on the situation, organization and struggles of workers from early industrialization to the present day - a work that is still standard literature today and is still available.

This was followed by non-fiction books on historical and political topics with a focus on “ women's history ”, including the edition of the women's city tours in Basel and Zurich; as well as The Interrupted Trail , The Eerie Patriots , Sniffing State Switzerland etc.

This was followed by a literary program with mainly Swiss authors, which began in 1989 with Max Frisch's Switzerland without an Army? A palaver was also extended to bilingual editions in German and Romansh and was continued with the lyric series “undeklarierte”. Limmat-Verlag regularly publishes translations by authors from French- speaking Switzerland and Italian-speaking Switzerland : Anna Felder , Federico Hindermann , Alberto Nessi , Giorgio Orelli , Giovanni Orelli , Fabio Pusterla . Limmat Verlag was awarded the Oertli Foundation Prize in 1994 for these efforts to achieve understanding between the language regions . Meanwhile, translations and bilingual volumes of Russian , Albanian , Friulian , Italian and Hungarian works have also appeared.

In the 1990s, Limmat Verlag published all of Friedrich Glauser's novels and stories in full, based on the original manuscripts.

Another focus of the publishing program are biographies and autobiographies: These include those by Gertrud Mosimann , Paula Charles , Adeline Favre , Fritz Brupbacher , Regula Engel , Anny Klawa-Morf , Max Frisch , Niklaus Meienberg , Wladimir Rosenbaum , Aline Valangin , Theo Pinkus and Amalie Pinkus .

Pinkus also published the magazine Zeitdienst in Limmat Verlag. From 1969 to 1981 the publisher brought out the Bibliographic Information (36 issues), which listed all current publications in the fields of the labor movement , Marxism-Leninism , revolutionaries and liberation movement, Third World from all publishers, including so-called pirated prints .

The folklore paperback is published as a series by Limmat-Verlag together with the Swiss Society for Folklore. In addition, photo and art volumes have been published by this cooperative publisher.

From 1991 to 2000 the Limmat Verlag was merged with the Unionsverlag , also based in Zurich .
