The Lion Rock ( German about "Löwenfelsen" ), short for Lion Rock Hill ( Chinese 獅子山 / 狮子山 , Pinyin Shīzi Shān , Jyutping Si 1 zi 2 Saan 1 - "literally Lion Mountain"), is a 495 m high mountain in Hong Kong . It lies between Kowloon and the New Territories and forms a natural border between the two regions in Hong Kong. The barren peak overgrown with sparse bushes is made of granite . The mountain is to a certain extent Hong Kong's “local mountain” and is one of the city's most striking natural monuments . The shape of the mountain is reminiscent of a crouching lion. This lion impression is said to be most impressively recognizable from the Choi Hung Estate ( 彩虹 邨 ) and the San Po Kong district ( 新 蒲 崗 / 新 蒲 岗 ) in East Kowloon . In Hong Kong, numerous streets, buildings, tunnels and institutions are named after Lion Rock, such as Lion Rock Road ( 獅子 石 道 / 狮子 石 道 ) in Kowloon City .

Lion Rock is located in the geographic center of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is located north of Kowloon Tong ( 九龍 塘 / 九龙 塘 ) and south of Tai Wai ( 大 圍 / 大 围 ) as a natural borderline between the two regions of Kowloon and the New Territories, which is passed through the Lion Rock Tunnel ( 獅子山 隧道 / 狮子山 隧道 ) are connected to each other. In addition to the road tunnel, part of the Hong Kong freeway system Route 1, passing through the rail tunnel in the Tuen Ma Line ( 屯馬綫 / 屯马线 ) the Lion Rock Hill, a direct MTR connection between Sha Tin and Central , which are expected to be completed in 2019 should. The mountain is a popular destination for both locals and tourists and is located in the center of the 530 hectare Lion Rock Country Park ( 獅子山 郊野 公園 / 狮子山 郊野 公园 ) nature reserve. Incidents (selection)
- The Lion Rock is occasionally frequented by mountaineers . A particularly spectacular action took place in the context of the protests in Hong Kong 2014 on October 23, 2014, when mountaineers raised a huge banner ( 我 要 真 普選 / 我 要 真 普选 , Wǒ yào zhēn pǔxuǎn , Jyutping Ngo 5 jiu 3 zan 1 pou 4 syun 2 - “I want real universal suffrage”), on which universal suffrage was demanded. The banner was removed the following day.
- On March 13, 2016, while trying to take a particularly spectacular photo of Hong Kong from the edge of Lion Rock, a tourist fell 400 m and was killed.
