List of old synagogues in Hessen

Of the around 220 synagogues that were located in what is now the state of Hesse in the 1930s , only a few were able to escape destruction by the National Socialists during the November pogroms in 1938 . The preserved houses of worship are mostly buildings that had previously been abandoned by their parishes or whose destruction was not or only incompletely carried out due to the proximity to neighboring houses.

The following list shows the synagogues that still exist in Hesse today. Former places of worship that have been converted into residential or commercial buildings or warehouses in a way that makes the original function unrecognizable are not taken into account:
