The list below contains all of the games released for the Sega 32X console hardware extension , including those that required the mega CD drive in addition to the 32X .

background

The 32X is a hardware extension for the Sega Mega Drive game console . The device developed under the code name "Project Mars" was supposed to increase the performance of the Mega Drive and serve as a temporary solution until the Sega Saturn was released . The 32X had different game modules than the Mega Drive and had its own game library. A total of 40 titles were produced worldwide, including six games that also required the mega-CD expansion .

Manufacturer Sega unveiled the device at the Consumer Electronics Show IT trade fair in June 1994 and presented it there as "the poor man's entry point into the games of the 'next generation'". After the presentation of Sega of Japan it was originally intended to appear as a new, completely independent console and to be positioned as a cheap alternative for gamers to enter the 32-bit era. At the suggestion of the head of Research and Development at Sega of America, Joe Miller, the console was converted into a plug-on extension for the already published Mega Drive and technically upgraded, with two 32-bit processor chips and a 3D graphics processor . Despite these changes, the console could not arouse the interest of developers or consumers, as the official successor to the Mega Drive, the Sega Saturn, had already been announced for the following year. In connection with the pressure to bring the expansion on the market in time for the Christmas business in 1994, the 32X suffered from a poor selection of games, including porting of older mega-drive games with improved color depth. Starting with an original retail price of $ 159, Sega lowered the price to $ 99 after just a few months and finally emptied inventory for $ 19.95. 800,000 units were sold worldwide.

Behind the scenes, Nakayama wanted us to sell a million units in the US in the first year. Kalinske and I said we could only sell 600,000. We shook hands on a compromise - 800,000. At the end of the year we had managed to shift 600,000 as estimated, so ended up with 200,000 units in our warehouse, which we had to sell to retailers at a steep discount to get rid of the inventory.
