Frontier Developments is a UK game development company founded in 1994. The company is based in Cambridge , England and has an office in Halifax , Canada . It employs over 500 people worldwide.
Company history
Frontier Developments was founded by David Braben in January 1994 after the game Frontier: Elite II he developed was released in 1993 with great success. He has been leading the company ever since, currently in the position of Chairman.
In 1995 the company's first game was released in the form of another sequel to the Elite series under the name Frontier: First Encounters . However, the game company GameTek released an unfinished version that contained many bugs, which made First Encounter only bad reviews. Frontier Developments thereupon sued Gametek for damages, the proceedings were ended in 1999. Frontier Developments was working on another sequel called Elite 4 , but since that title had been in the works since 1998, it has been referred to as vaporware several times and has not been on the list of Frontier games developed and in development for some time Developments listed. Instead, a multiplayer and network-compatible elite successor with contemporary graphics is planned for 2014 , which should tie in with the game principle of the original elite . The project was financed through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com .
In addition to the Elite series, Frontier Developments also developed Dog's Life and parts of the RollerCoaster Tycoon series. It also has the sole license for Wallace & Gromit's computer games .
At the Xbox press conference at GamesCom 2017, Frontier announced the title Jurassic World Evolution for a release in 2018.
In January 2019, it was announced that Frontier was working on a new title, which will be followed by more information in the coming year.
As announced in March 2020, Frontier Development has acquired the official license for Formula 1 management game for the years 2022 to 2025 from Liberty Media .
