Opteron is the brand name for server and workstation processors from AMD .
All Opteron for Socket 939 and 940 have a three-digit model number Opteron XYY . All newer Opterons have a four-digit model number Opteron XZYY . In the previous numbering scheme, the first digit X specifies how many processors the processor can be used with on the motherboard :
1 - For systems with one processor
2 - For systems with two processors
8 - For systems with up to eight processors
The second digit Z of the four-digit model number stands for the generation of Opteron processors:
First generation Opterons (socket 939 and 940) do not have this mark
2 - Second Generation Opteron (Socket AM2 and F)
3 - Third Generation Opteron (Socket AM2 + and F / F +)
4 - fourth generation Opteron (Socket AM2 + and F / F +)
With the new Lisbon / Magny-Cours processors, AMD introduced a new four-digit numbering scheme in addition to new sockets in 2010: X now stands for the platform and Z for the generation of the new models.
The last two digits YY encode the processor clock in all numbering schemes. In general, a larger number here indicates a higher speed. The information is comparable within a generation and with the same number of processor cores.
The additional designations HE and EE indicate models with lower and lower power losses.
The additional designation SE indicates models with higher power consumption, this usually applies to the most highly clocked models of a generation.
