Altenfils Castle | Rosenbeck |
On the 486 m high Altenfels mountain, which drops steeply by 150 m to the south, there were two fortresses from the High Middle Ages . The remains of the castle on the west summit could only be explored through an emergency excavation in 1968, before they were destroyed by a quarry. In contrast, the remains of the east castle were excavated, secured and made accessible. | 12th to 13th centuries |

Henke quarry | Nehden south of Nehden |
The local area was in the early Cretaceous near the coast of a shallow sea. The flat hilly landscape was criss-crossed by lakes and rivers, on whose banks bald cypresses, giant tree ferns, sequoias and ferns grew. Fossil vertebrate bones were discovered here in the 1980s. Because of their uniqueness, they were considered a sensation in scientific circles. |
