St. Martinus Church with Romanesque tower | Martinusplatz 11 | The three-storey west tower with a pyramid-shaped slate-covered dome was built around 1160–1170. Continuous, vertically arranged pilaster strips , which are interrupted by a simple arched frieze on the ground floor and a frieze of overlapping arches on the second floor, structure the tower. The two basement floors are windowless; on the third floor there is a large Romanesque double window in each panel . The subdividing pillars made of sinter of the Roman aqueduct have cube capitals . The arched portal in the middle of the west side of the tower leads into the tower hall.
The brick church covered with a gable roof was built in 1874/75 by August Lange in neo-Romanesque style as a three-aisled basilica with three long aisles, lower aisles, a transept that only slightly surpasses the aisles and a choir closed on five sides. |
