The substructure of the gate consists of tuff, quarry stone and trachyte with later brick additions. The ogival passage is spanned by a groin vault.

The two-story brick superstructure with a crenellated crown in neo-Gothic style was built during the restoration in 1853 when the gate was equipped with prison cells. The different materials show how far the gate was destroyed in the siege of Lechenich in the Hessian War in 1642 . The one-sided exposure of the gate took place in 1901 during the expansion of what was then Luxemburger Strasse (now Bonner Strasse).

After the persecution of the Jews in 1349, Jewish gravestones from the Cologne Jewish cemetery were used as spoil at the gate of the outer bailey, including the gravestone of Mar Jacob .

The castle that was set on fire when the elector's French allies withdrew in 1689 was not restored and fell into disrepair in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the main castle's still usable buildings were also demolished so that only the walls and towers remained.
