Schmidmühlen, known as the birthplace of the carver Erasmus Grasser , is located at the confluence of the Lauterach and Vils in a Jura valley floor. Shortly before the confluence with the Vils or Alte Vils, the Lauterach divides into two arms, which then enclose the old settlement area of the place, which was otherwise probably not fortified. The place owes its origin and its former prosperity to this favorable condition by the river. A trade route that ran between Lauterhofen and Premberg crossed the course of the Vils, which is used by merchant ships. The water of the smaller Lauterach drove various mills and the iron hammer in the lower castle . The smelting of the ores found in the area was not without importance for Schmidmühlen.

The place, first mentioned in the year 1000, has demonstrably the market rights and an official seat in 1270. The structural focus is the Catholic parish church of St. Giles, which was redesigned and expanded in 1972/73. Along the main street, which was formerly called Langgasse, there are mainly gabled houses of the innkeepers and craftsmen, mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another street, which is formed by Poststrasse and Hammerstrasse, runs across it from north to south. At the end of Hammerstrasse is the Hammerschloss (Lower Castle). The multi-storey building of this old iron hammer with its high hipped roof has determined the silhouette of the place for centuries. The opposite pole to this is the Upper Castle at the northwestern end of the market. This is where the seat of the Palatinate Neuburg judge, who administered the Schmidmühlen office from here, used to be. The renaissance building now serves as the town hall of the market town. Beyond Lauterach and Alter Vils, two small suburbs join the old town center in the north and east.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
