Ensemble town center Thüngersheim
According to evidence from the late Romanesque church tower, the place ( location ) mentioned for the first time in 1098 must have already had a certain importance in the high Middle Ages. A fork in the road further south, outside the village, seems to have been decisive for the topographical peculiarities of the settlement: the road from Würzburg to Karlstadt and a path branching off from this towards Retzstadt cut through the local area without meeting each other. In the second half of the 16th century , Thüngersheim experienced a strongly geometrical expansion, combined with a wall fortification : within an approximately rectangular overall outline, the two long-distance paths are parallel to one another, broad main streets with gates at their respective ends; Between them, according to the slope of the terrain, slightly sloping cross streets are stretched, so that an extremely compelling, ladder-shaped overall floor plan is created. The parcelling does not always achieve the geometric clarity that characterizes the largely standardized street layout; it is likely to be partly due to older conditions that already existed in the 16th century. Despite its size and urban development, the place has always remained a village. The development consists of wine farms, the houses of which, mostly on the gable side facing the street, are connected by a side gate. Younger, eaves-standing buildings are accentuated by wide gate openings in the central axis. Much of the structure is still historic. In addition to some striking houses from the late 16th century, the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries are most strongly represented. The parish church is located eccentrically in the northwest corner of the wall rectangle, preserved gaden testify to a former self-fortification. The place that lacks a focus (it also has no space) is characterized by the strict regularity of its division and could possibly be addressed as a monument to urban development tendencies under Julius Echter. File number: E-6-79-194-1.
Thüngersheim fortifications
The town wall was built in rubble stone masonry made of sandstone in the 2nd half of the 16th century. The former upright rectangular wall ring has only survived in remains and in the built-up state. Of the four former gateways, three have survived, the so-called Retzstadter Tor on the northeast side (see also Obere Hauptstrasse 7), the so-called Würzburger or Veitshöchheimer Tor in the southwest (see also Veitshöchheimer Str. 2) and the so-called Hirtentor in the southeast (see also Obere Hauptstrasse 34). - ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
