Complete old town Old town The old town as a whole encompasses the medieval part of the city within the boundaries of the city fortifications, which were largely abandoned in the 19th century. The medieval settlement emerged in the 12th century over the remains of a Roman settlement. Six of the seven noble courts are still preserved. They reflect the changing power relations and divisions of the city between the Kurpfalz , Hanau and Hesse . In the northeast, the Darmstadt Castle , in the southwest, the Palatinate Castle marks the border of the historic city center. Wambolt Castle is located at the western exit of the old town . The Rodenstein Castle dominates the northwest of the old town . The south-east of the entire complex is marked by the Gans'schen Adelshof .

Due to major changes, only parts of the area, on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, on Untergasse east of the church, on Schlierbacher Straße north of the town hall and on Obertorstraße and the confluence with Untergasse, historically coherent properties have been preserved.
