Manor and Neuschönfels Castle: Castle, bell tower in the park, enclosure walls and rotunda at the castle entrance Siedlerstrasse 20
(map)
16th century (castle) Founded as a separate manor after the Weißenbach inheritance in 1548, of architectural and regional historical importance, Renaissance castle, redesigned in neo-Gothic style.

Individual features of the entity (see obj. 09302116)

Collection text 1999 with addition from 2008:

Massive, two-storey plastered quarry stone building with loft extension, gabled houses, round bay windows at the corner of the building (restored), large entrance portal made of porphyry tufa, (until 2008 erroneously recorded under street of unit 5)

Extract from the monument preservation objective from 2001:

"1. General

The Neuschönfels Castle, built on a mountain spur, is located to the west directly opposite the Altschönfels Castle and is separated from it by the deeply cut valley of the Schönfelser Bach.

Neuschönfels was established as its own manor in 1548 after the Weißenbach inheritance. The castle was probably built immediately afterwards and was the residence of the manor rule. A barrier wall connects the castle with the "Saigerturm" (bell tower) located not far to the south, and handsome farm buildings form a regular courtyard that extends northwest of the castle. Today the buildings of the manor are divided into many owners and a street crosses the former farmyard, so that only the knowledgeable eye can see the former closedness of the complex.

With the low, compact rotunda with loopholes to the south-west, the octagonal bell tower to the south-east, the massive enclosure and the small garden, the castle forms an inseparable entity, made up of three traffic areas, the main access road with a space-like widening in front of the entrance portal in the west and the two pedestrian paths in the north and north East is surrounded like an island.

2. Castle

2.1. Monument value

The two-storey solid construction of the castle was built around 1550 in one go by von Weißenbach. In 1686 he passed the manor into the possession of the counts of the Bose family, who owned it until the 19th century. In 1831 Friedrich Moritz Hempel from Zwickau bought the entire facility. After several changes of ownership, it was bought by Gerhard Uhlig in 1899. The palace recently housed the Schönfels municipal administration on the ground floor, the Sparkasse and kindergarten on the first floor, two apartments and the municipal administration archive on the first attic and storage rooms on the second attic. It is currently vacant.

The house rises above a rectangular floor plan with massive external and internal walls made of quarry stone. Vaulted massive basements are known in the area under the central corridor, which occupies the entire depth of the house, the staircase extension in the east and under the northeast room. The fighters of the round arched vault are about 80 cm above the top edge of the floor. The masonry is made of quarry stone and in the apex of the vaults of brick and clay plaster. The floor is tiled.

The ground floor originally consisted of the large central corridor and two large rooms on each side. The rooms E1, E2 and E3 are vaulted. Room E4 was accessible from the hallway and from room E3, it is closed with a profiled wooden beam ceiling. Room E5 is also vaulted with a raised barrel. All other partition walls were added later, as indicated by the portals from the construction period (P1 to P5). It needs to be checked whether there was also a portal between rooms E1 and E2. It is very likely that the large central corridor also had a profiled beam ceiling. Room E6 is an extension - most likely from the time after 1893.

The upper floor originally had the same spatial structure as the ground floor, consisting of a central corridor and four assigned rooms (rooms O1 to O4). Both here and there, access was from the staircase (rooms E5 and O5). Only in room O4 was the wooden beam ceiling partially visible. All other ceilings were given smooth plaster. Comparable to the mansions in Frankenberg or Chemnitz-Klaffenbach, a representative connection between the ground floor and the upper floor was created in good neo-Gothic forms in the large central corridor at the beginning of the 19th century and the staircase of the staircase was smoothed. Here, too, the arched portals (P1 to P6) point to the spatial structure of the building period, although relocations or the production of copies cannot be ruled out in every case. Floorboards form all floor coverings. The characteristic round bay window belongs to room O4.

The entire roof area is also largely the same construction time. The high pitched roof with the dwelling houses is built up in three collar beam levels, with the reclining chair in the first attic and the construction of the two hanging columns over the second, third and fourth attic, despite the various ingredients and changes in their legibility. The stairs (probably early 19th century) from the upper floor to the top floor in room O2 are also of good design. The connection of the dwarf roofs to the main roof can largely be described as the original.

The external shape of the castle, like hardly any other building in the region, bears a renaissance-like character through the building proportions, the roof shape, the preserved dwelling houses, the bay window with the simple round console, the main portal and the profiled window frames in the gable. The ogival closed windows are probably neo-Gothic. They were probably brought in at the same time as the new main staircase at the beginning of the 19th century. The dating of 1893, which can be read on the east extension, refers to the new plastering of the house that was carried out at that time. The building file, which began in 1859, does not name any major structural changes. The additions to the terrace and the toilet system are the result of structural changes in 1907 or 1911. Perhaps the wide windows spanned by a segment arch were also broken back then. "

16th century (castle) Founded as a separate manor after the Weißenbach inheritance in 1548, of architectural and regional historical importance, Renaissance castle, redesigned in neo-Gothic style.

Monument text:

On a small hill, separated by a valley cut across from Schönfels Castle, which dates from around 1200, lies Neu Schönfels Castle. The specialty of the object lies in the largely preserved originality of the building as an authentic, early representative of the Renaissance for the middle of the 16th century in Saxony and even in Germany. Renaissance forms of the house, which can be proven to have been built in 1550, are present in the two full storeys, the lowest level of the attic with its two huge dwelling houses and in the oriel tower on the southwest corner. In particular, the numerous richly decorated Renaissance portals are impressive in the context of the floor plan structure that was still built at the time. The latter divides the two main levels uniformly into five rooms each, with the central room presumably already being used back then, but certainly from the 19th century to access the house levels. In the 19th century, there were limited conversions in the neo-Gothic style. The resulting staircase is of excellent quality. Despite various subsequent uses, the character of the castle as a renaissance complex including the architectural details of the 19th century was largely retained. (LfD / 2011)
