Hauptstrasse 59 KG location : Forchtenau |
The church was consecrated in 1347 as a subsidiary church of Mattersburg by Bishop Albert of Nicomedia, the vicarius of the bishop of Raab . According to the inscription above the church door, it was expanded in 1655 and 1703 in the course of the construction of the monastery. In 1695, Prince Paul Esterházy handed over the church and the attached monastery to the Servites who were brought into the country in the course of the Counter-Reformation . Between 1983 and 1985, the aisle was enlarged as part of the renovation of the church. The windows were decorated by the Eisenstadt artist and nun Elfriede Ettl with depictions of Psalm 148 (“Praise to God in Creation”). The church, which is under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary , which is a popular pilgrimage site in connection with the Rosalienkapelle , has a baroque high altar. At its center is a 15th century Gothic Madonna with a baby Jesus lying on her arm. The legend after this statue has remained intact during fires and other damage. |
