The column was donated by Ignaz Reichhard von Baldegger in 1705. It stood on Wiener Strasse at the level of the (no longer existing) house 226, but later changed location several times. Today's appearance is not original, but the base is still original. On the base there is a coat of arms relief and the inscription IR-VB / 17-05 (Ignaz Reichhard von Baldegger, 1705). According to legend, those sentenced to death are said to have had the opportunity to pray for last repentance at the column on the way to the place of execution in Kleinmünchen.

The building was first mentioned in the 13th century, and in the 16th century it came into the possession of the Linz post administrator Josef Ignaz Gross von Ehrenstein and was subsequently called "Posthof". In 1984 the two-storey U-shaped main building was adapted as the center of contemporary culture at the harbor and in 1990 a modern glass building was added to the south (Posthof II).
