Catholic parish church hl. Stephen ObjectID : 15516 |
Saxen location KG: Saxen |
In a document from the year 823 two churches are mentioned in the old parish of Saxen, the second church being in the village of Hofkirchen and no longer existing. The parish church of Saxen was built in the middle of the 12th century and expanded until around 1530. Next to the north portal of the church is a Romanesque stone sculpture. This hooded monk's head could represent the builder who probably came from Waldhausen Abbey . The close connection with the Clam rule is documented by grave tablets inside and outside the church. A keystone in the vault shows the coat of arms of the Perger von Clam family. The roof of the massive church tower was given its current shape in 1855. |
